Genesis 4: Consequences of the Fall

Ice Breaker:  Did you ever suspect your parents of having “favorites” among your siblings?  What was the basis for your suspicion?

Dig:

  1.  Abel: What do you learn about Abel’s vocation?  His relationship with God?  His relationship with his brother?  Any other characteristics? (also see Hebrews 11:4)

  1. Cain: What do you learn about Cain’s vocation? His relationship with God?  His relationship with his brother?  His personality?  Any other characteristics?  (also see 1 John 3:12)

  1. After the murder of Abel, why do you think God approached Cain the way He did? Why did He protect Cain?  Look at Cain’s confession in vv13-14 and God’s response in vv15-16; did Cain repent of his sin?

  1. In this chapter, trace the growth of sin and the evidence of its power and its effects. Also, what evidence do you find of God’s mercy?

Apply:

  1. What “anger issues” do you have in your own life? What “helps” do you take from this passage?

  1. Are you your “brother’s keeper”? How so?  What brothers/sisters do you keep?  How well are you doing?  What next steps do you sense God calling you to take in this regard?
